My Why
For me, it’s always been about the reward.
Before I was a broker, I worked in real estate. My wife, De, has been a mortgage broker for years, and she used to tell me I’d make a great one too. She saw that I had a different way of looking after people, that I cared more about helping than selling.
When I finally decided to make the switch, I told her, "I want to help people, not just find them the right house, but the right solution." Then I popped my head around the door and asked if this was a job interview. We both cracked up laughing, but honestly, that little exchange sums up exactly why I love what I do.
Now, De and her business partner aren’t exactly the soft-and-fluffy type. My start in broking wasn’t "here’s your desk and good luck." It was 18 months of grunt work, long days, and plenty of stuff I didn’t enjoy at the time. Back then, I thought the training was pretty rough. Turns out, it was better than most. By the time I finally sat down with my first real clients, I was ready, and I’d earned it.
Starting Your Home Loan Guy here in Yanchep wasn’t easy. New town, new business, no one knew me yet. But that’s been the best part of it. Every referral, every thank-you message, every first home, it’s all been built on trust, one person at a time.

Who I Love Working With
I work with all sorts of clients - refinances, investors, first home buyers - but there are a couple of situations that really hit home for me.
Separations
These ones are tough. When someone comes to me after a separation, they’re usually exhausted and pretty raw. They don’t know me, but they’ve got to trust me with something huge. So I take it slow. I listen, I explain things clearly, and I do my best to make them feel supported the whole way through. When that approval finally lands and they realise they can start again, that moment’s unbeatable. It’s not just a loan. It’s a fresh start.
First Home Buyers
Then there are my first home buyers. Total opposite. They’re nervous, excited, full of questions, and I love that energy.
I get a lot of, "Sorry, I don’t really know what I’m doing," and I always tell them, "Why would you? You’ve never done this before." My job’s to guide them through it and make the whole thing make sense, without all the jargon.
Watching someone hold their first set of keys... yeah, that never gets old.
The Reward
Every now and then, something happens that reminds me exactly why I do this job. Here are a few of my Favourite stories
There was Sarah, a mum starting over after leaving a really bad marriage. She honestly didn’t think she’d ever own a home again. We worked together for months to piece it all together.
When her approval came through, she wrote:
"Thank you SOOOOO much!!!! Excitement levels are sky high right now!!! Escaping a terribly hideous marriage and starting a whole new life for my babies and I! And you guys were a crucial part of that."
Then on settlement day she sent another message,
"I’m sitting on the floor of my very own home, and I couldn’t have done that without you."
Every time I read that one, I smile. It’s why I do what I do.
Then there’s James and his wife. They’d been told by just about everyone that they’d never build an investment portfolio. We refinanced, restructured, and suddenly the door opened.
A few weeks later, I got this message:
"Once again thank you for all your help and guidance. It has been so easy from start to finish."
That stuff never gets old. Helping people realise what’s possible, that’s the best part.
Michelle’s story still gets me too. Another tough separation. Servicing was tight, banks were being painful, and the first lender pushed back on everything. After months of back-and-forth, I told them we were walking away and starting again elsewhere.
That wasn’t easy to say to Michelle, she’d already been through enough. But we reset, found another lender, and three weeks later, we had formal approval.
When I rang to tell her, she said,
"Andy, I hate you. I never cry at anything, but I’m sitting in my car right now with tears running down my face. Thank you so much."
I hung up and just sat there for a minute, grinning like an idiot. That’s what it’s all about.
Then there was Caitlin, a first home buyer whose deal threw us a few curveballs. We got through it though, and when she got her keys, she sent,
"We are now officially home owners. Thanks for everything over the last few weeks."
And finally, Liam. Poor bloke had the roughest run, nightmare agent, useless conveyancer, the lot. Everything that could go wrong, did, almost.
When I called to congratulate him on settlement, he said,
"If it weren’t for you, I would’ve withdrawn my purchase."
He told me I was the only one who made it what it should’ve been, fun, exciting, something to celebrate. Everyone else made it stressful. That one meant a lot.
These moments, the messages, the calls, the tears, the laughs, they’re what keep me going.
A Final Thought
I’ve met a lot of brokers over the years. Most of them are just like me, they care deeply, they fight for their clients, and they love what they do.
If you’ve already found someone like that, hold onto them. They’re worth their weight in gold.
But if you haven’t yet, maybe that’s where I come in.
